Opcon improves Russian-owned steel plant energy efficiency in Hungary – producing fuel free electricity from waste heat

First order in a planned installation of five Opcon Powerboxes

Opcon, the energy and environmental technology Group, has received its first order in Hungary for a steam-driven Opcon Powerbox WST that will produce fuel-free, carbon-free electricity from waste heat after installation at the Russian owned ISD Dunaferr steel plant in Dunaújváros, Hungary. Responsible for the installation is Opcon’s Hungarian partner Elco Group, a renowned engineering company that sells, installs and services turn-key solutions in the field of electricity, and has 140 employees and operations in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria.

The order for one Opcon Powerbox WST is the first in a planned application with installation of five Opcon Powerboxes (3 WST and 2 ORC) at the ISD Dunaferr steel mill. Initially waste surplus steam will be used for fuel-free electricity production from an Opcon Powerbox WST. Delivery is scheduled for spring 2012.

In total, ISD Dunaferr expects there to be room for more than the five Opcon Powerboxes presently being planned for in further applications. Two of the applications that are being studied prefeatures a serial installation of a steam-powered and a water-powered Opcon Powerbox in order to optimize electricity production utilizing waste heat from surplus steam as well as flue gases.

“This is our first order from eastern Central Europe which has a large pent-up demand for energy efficiency and renewable energy. We expect it to be followed by more orders next year for the planned installation. I am happy to be able to do this with Elco who with our help will be responsible for quality installation and service locally, says Rolf Hasselström, CEO, Opcon AB.

“We are very proud, after more than a year of very close cooperation and hard work with the OPCON group, to announce this first deal with ISD-Dunaferr. This marks the beginning of a major energy efficiency program. A program that will save a lot of resources and money for Dunaferr’s owners. In case the whole program is adopted we are looking at an hourly production of 5-6 MW of electricity from waste heat allowing Dunaferr to reduce purchased electricity with some 6-8 %”, says Tamás OROSZ , CEO, ELCO group

“This will be our first pilot project in the Central- East Europe region with an Opcon Powerbox application. We see a huge market potential for waste heat utilization and geothermal heat usage with similar systems in the region”, says Tamás OROSZ , CEO, ELCO group

“You find this type of waste heat and waste energy in lots of places in industry and at power stations. In all of the world's electricity production, only one third of the energy content becomes electricity, the rest becomes heat that often goes to waste. Our ability to produce electricity from wet, saturated steam or hot water at temperatures as low as 55 degrees Celsius opens great opportunities to use energy that is currently wasted," says Rolf Hasselström, CEO, Opcon AB.

A part of Opcon’s focus on Waste to Value, Opcon Powerbox is Opcon’s proprietary product for production of new carbon-free electricity primarily from waste and surplus heat at temperatures as low as 55° C. Among other applications, Opcon Powerbox can be installed in large process plants, power stations, large diesel engines and, after modification, on large ships, and can produce up to 6,000 MWh per year.
