Using Opcon technology, Dalkia improves the energy efficiency of the boiler system at the Skinnskatteberg sawmill

Opcon, the energy and environmental technology Group, has received an order for the market-leading flue gas condensation and water treatment equipment made by its subsidiary, SRE, to be delivered to the Setra sawmill in Skinnskatteberg, Sweden. The customer is the leading European company in energy services, Dalkia, which owns and operates the boiler plant at the Setra sawmill. The investment will improve the energy efficiency of the plant and increase energy production, which will also enable future deliveries of green district heating into the E.ON district heating network in Skinnskatteberg.

Setra’s sawmill at Skinnskatteberg processes pinewood only and the wood dryers get heat from a 16 MW boiler powered by biofuel. The district heating network in Skinnskatteberg is a small one, which both limits and complicates opportunities for flue gas condensation. These problems have been solved however with SRE’s flue gas condenser, which features a unique function for partial flue gas condensation. In total, Dalkia expects that it will be able to increase energy production from waste heat by around 4-5 GWh per year using SRE’s flue gas condenser.

“Naturally, we are proud that Dalkia, a European leader in energy services, has chosen our solution for improving energy efficiency and that we will be able to help them in their efforts to reduce their environmental impact. Recycling waste heat is one of the most effective contributions a company can make for the environment. Globally, the recycling of waste heat has enormous potential for increased energy efficiency and reduced emissions. Opcon has several solutions in this area, ” says Rolf Hasselström, President and CEO of Opcon AB.

Opcon has sold the SRE Renergi flue gas condenser in 13 countries. Depending on the moisture level of the fuel, the condenser can improve energy efficiency by up to 20-30%. It can also contribute to further treatment with reduced emissions of particles.

SRE and Saxlund are leading bioenergy brands and a part of Opcon’s Renewable Energy business area and its Waste To Value initiative with a special focus on Waste Heat Recovery and bioenergy. Within the bioenergy sector, Opcon offers everything from the design of complete combined heat and power (CHP) plants to handling systems and incineration plants under the Saxlund brand. Under the SRE Renergi brand, systems are supplied for treatment and improved energy efficiency for bioenergy-powered district heating plants, sawmills, pellets producers and commercial greenhouses. The offer also includes flue gas condensation equipment for industrial activities as well as drying systems for biomass. The Opcon Group also supplies Opcon Powerbox for production of green electricity produced from hot water or wet steam.
