Volunteers join in Triton College’s efforts to give back to communities on Make A Difference Day on Oct. 27

More than 140 volunteers, many students and staff of Triton College, are excited to take to the district communities to paint fences, pick up trash, provide companionship and more – all in the name of joining together to make a difference on Oct. 27.

Triton’s CommunityON (Organizations Network) group, composed of a network of organizations serving youth and seniors with a community-centered focus, is joining in the nation’s largest day of service with Make a Difference Day 2012. The group invited community members and area organizations to join in its community-wide efforts to make an impact at various locations.

Service projects include sorting donations at Aspire on Broadway Resale Shop (Melrose Park), providing company to senior citizens at Belmont Village and Accolade Adult Day Services (both at Oak Park), painting at Burton Park (Maywood) and West Cook YMCA (Oak Park), making Halloween decorations with senior citizens at Concord Place (Northlake) and cleaning up the picnic and recreation areas of Thatcher Woods (River Forest) of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.

Triton College President Patricia Granados said the number of volunteers has exceeded expectations with this being the first year for CommunityON to participate in this national day.

“I am pleased that Triton College along with our community organization partners will participate in this national day of service,” she said. “As we seek to make a positive difference each and every day in the educational experience of our students, we truly welcome the opportunity to support sustainability and our environment as we participate in this service project. The college administration has selected to volunteer their time to clean up Thatcher Woods and we hope that this one small act will help to keep our community beautiful.”

Aside from Triton College, other businesses and organizations prepared to give of their time include Gossip Salon and Day Spa in Oak Park and students and faculty of Walther Lutheran High School and Stevenson Elementary, both in Melrose Park.
