At the moment people who own caravans currently benefit from VAT free water and sewage bills. This tax exemption currently applies to around 300,000 people living in the Uk, but this will be stopped in January next year.
The change is legislation will be made to comply with EU regulations. It’s predicted that the change will cost each caravan owner an additional £100 per year, collectively raking in a staggering £3 million for HM Revenue and Customs.
Bills for water and sewage, as well as the connection costs to utilities are also currently zero rated for caravans, but this too will end next year- further bumping up the cost of owning a caravan.
A spokesperson speaking on behalf of the holiday industry has said that the changes to these laws are an unwelcome change that will burden the industry with more extra costs. However, the government has dismissed this and has said that until now caravan owners have simply had a fortunate break, and that they will now have to pay the same bills as everybody else.
People who either own, or are looking to buy boats too will be affected by these changes. Boats which are bought by residents of the UK for use outside of the European Union will also be hit with the VAT charge. Only boats which are taken to the non-EU destination by the manufacturer will escape the additional charges.
Most luxury yachts are purchased in this way, in that they are bought and sailed to their destination by the owner; this will no longer be allowed, unless the full VAT price is paid at the time of the sale.
The owners of leisure vehicles may also be hit with even more charges if the government gives the proposed green taxes the go ahead. The spokesman for the holiday industry is hopeful that these rising costs will not put a put people off of purchasing or holidaying in caravans, motor homes and other recreational vehicles.
