University culture is associated with many things; too much alcohol and drunken one night stands to name a few. And this type of risky behavior has been a concern for health officials for some time. However, a recent report has shown that young people are now more likely to use a condom compared to the older generations.
The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior which was compiled last year showed that 33% of young people surveyed were regularly using condoms, such as Durex condoms with their partners.
In the same survey, adults over the age of 40 who classified their sexual partners as ‘casual’ rather than ‘relationship partners’ used condoms significantly less than the young people did. Men between the ages of 18 and 24 were less than half as likely to use a condom as young men under the age of 18. However, this age group still used condoms much more often than men who were over the age of 40.
Health experts believe that the reason between the differing sexual attitudes towards condoms is due to the difference in the sex education the two generations received. A medical professional said on the matter ‘Reproductive health is a big concern and a big issue for young adults,’ she said. ‘The general medical office, particularly for older adults, is not geared towards that. They're really focusing on the health issues that are most prevalent at that age, which are obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cancer screenings — things like that.’
Today, young adults are being educated in school on the importance of using a condom to protect against the spread of STI’s, and pregnancy. However years ago the emphasis was purely on preventing pregnancy through the use of the contraceptive pill. This is believed to be the reason why the spread of STI’s amongst the over 40’s has significantly risen, while the spread amongst the younger generation has decreased.
