Hardwood flooring soars in popularity

Many people are replacing their old, worn carpets for hardwood flooring. If you are laying a wooden floor or a solid wood floor, there are ways you can reduce your carbon footprint. Find out more here.

In the last three years, the number of people ripping up their carpets and laminate floors and installing hardwood flooring has significantly risen.  This has seen the amount of carpet which is being thrown away and sent to landfill sites increase- which has an extremely damaging effect on the environment.

Thankfully, a non-profit organisation called Carpet Recycling UK has come to the rescue and has stopped a total of 2,760 tonnes of carpet from being sent to landfill.  Instead of adding to the rubbish the UK produces, the waste carpet is instead re-used for making plastic, energy recovery and to make surface mixtures.

In the last year Carpet Recycling UK has managed to divert 53% of the total annual carpet waste; in comparison at the end of 2009 just 6% of the annual carpet waste was diverted.  Co-ordinator of Carpet Recycling UK Jane Gardner has said: “These figures are a tremendous achievement, showing that UK carpet manufacturers who are CRUK members greatly surpassed the sector’s average landfill diversion rate.”

Carpet Recycling UK was founded in order to reduce the amount of carpet which was being sent to landfill sites across the UK, and challenge the amount of wastage the people in the UK were producing.

Through their work, the organisation is making replacing your carpet with a hardwearing wooden floor much more environmentally friendly.  Unfortunately the company is unable to offer carpet recycling directly to consumers, but through its work it does aim to improve the number of recycling opportunities available to people living in the UK.

This non-profit organisation continues to research ways in which unwanted carpet can be re-used in order to cut the amount of waste we produce as a country.
