The large scale flooring exhibition titled ‘Surfaces’ which took place at the Mandalay Bay Convention Centre in Las Vagas recently, was deemed a success by all who attended.
This exhibition has earned a reputation for exhibiting the latest trends in all that is new and popular in the flooring industry. On show at the exhibit was a wide international product range which included carpeting, tiling, solid wood flooring, laminate flooring, rugs, and even specialist flooring types.
One particularly popular hardwood flooring trend was a type of flooring known as ‘marquetry’. This type of wooden floor is similar to parquetry, which is where planks of hardwood are repeated or tessellated to form simple geometric designs. In comparison, marquetry is where planks of different coloured and textured wood flooring is used to create decorative designs and pictures, to produce a striking feature that is able to complement any home.
The appearance of marquetry at the exhibition surprised many people who attended the flooring show; though this particular trend does fit with the current demand for vintage inspired decoration and décor, as marquetry is an ancient tradition. Inspired by 16th century Florence, marquetry was first introduced to London in 1660, and imported to France in the mid 17th century.
