COLORADO SPRINGS RESIDENT WINS $30,000 IN SWEEPSTAKES
25-Year-Old Iraq Veteran Wins TruGreen Ultimate Backyard Makeover Grand Prize
MEMPHIS, Tenn., February 22, 2011 – When Colorado Springs, Colo., resident Elyse Atoe returned from her second deployment to Iraq in March 2009, she was dismayed by the state of her yard. However, things are looking up for Atoe. The active-duty army supply sergeant recently found out she was the grand prize winner in the TruGreen Ultimate Backyard Makeover. TruGreen partnered with home improvement retailer Lowe’s in the sweepstakes, with the grand prize a $30,000 Lowe’s gift card.
“I bought my house in July 2007 and deployed five months later. While I was in Iraq, I didn’t have anyone living in the house, and the yard looked terrible when I came home 15 months later,” she said. “We tried relaying the sod last spring, but it didn’t take.”
Atoe plans to use the prize to relay the sod in her yard, put in an outdoor stone fireplace, add a rock border and add shrubs, flowers, and trees to her yard, and possibly fix the patio.
“It’s such a blessing to win,” said Atoe, who saw the sweepstakes advertised in the spring and entered online. “I’ve had a pretty rough year, and I’ve been totally embarrassed by my yard. I’d been watching a lot of home improvement shows on television, so when I saw the opportunity to enter the sweepstakes, I thought, why not?”
Atoe, who is based at Fort Carson, was pregnant at the time with her now 6-month-old daughter when she entered the TruGreen sweepstakes.
“I’m so thankful for TruGreen for holding this sweepstakes because it will allow me to make some changes to my yard that I’ve wanted to do for some time,” she said. “I’m looking forward to adding some color and just making the backyard more attractive.”
Steve Donly, TruGreen president, said the company offered the sweepstakes to celebrate the American backyard and give people the opportunity to make improvements to their “outdoor living rooms.”
“A well-cared for, healthy lawn is the best backdrop for any backyard improvement,” he said. “At TruGreen, we love our lawns, and this was a great opportunity to give people the chance to transform theirs. We congratulate Elyse and all the other sweepstakes winners.”
In addition to the grand prize, 50 first prize winners each received a $1,000 Lowe’s gift card, and 35 weekly winners received a $500 Lowe’s gift card. For a specific lawn care program to keep your lawn in top condition, Donly recommends homeowners seek advice from a qualified lawn care professional. They can direct you to appropriate products, recommend a watering schedule, and identify any problems in the lawn.
Building on the popularity of the TruGreen Ultimate Backyard Makeover, TruGreen launched a new sweepstakes on January 24, 2011. The TruStories Sweepstakes features a variety of prizes, including a grand prize, to help Americans bring their dreams for their yards to life. Go to www.trugreensweepstakes.com/win for details. The TruStories Sweepstakes will run through October 15, 2011.
