A climb of their lives to help raise money for leading cancer charity
Rhondda Cynon Taff, UK, 20 November 2013: Two employees from TT electronics AB Connectors in Rhondda Cynon Taff, are preparing themselves for a massive challenge by taking part in the Mount Kilimanjaro Hike next year to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, the company’s chosen Charity of the Year. The hike begins on the 2nd October 2014 and follows the Machamé Route, which sees the group spending seven days on the mountain. They will spend up to 10 hours a day trekking to reach the summit at 5,896m, the highest point in Africa. This is a gruelling challenge and will test them to the extreme.
Dean O’Brien and Mark Edwards, both CNC Technicians, are now on a strict training regime to ensure they can conquer Africa’s highest mountain. Although both men are in good shape - Dean is a rugby coach - their training includes plenty of extra time in the gym and they are also planning to tackle the hills of Snowdon next year. Mark said: “Dean and I both love a challenge and the Kilimanjaro hike offers just that! The company was already supporting Macmillan so it made sense to continue the fundraising, plus everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer in some way, so anything that we can do to help such a worthwhile cause is an added bonus.”
They will not only have to focus on their fitness levels, but also reaching their minimum fundraising target of £5,000 each. The pair, with support from their AB Connectors’ colleagues, have already set about fundraising with a sponsored walk and cake sale which raised over £1000 and all monies raised are being generously match funded by TT electronics plc. In November the pair organised a ‘Rock n Rugby’ night when Wales played Australia in the rugby autumn internationals. The event included an auction, buffet and local bands. There are also plenty of ideas for fundraising events in the New Year. To show your support for Dean and Mark’s challenge you can sponsor them by texting DOBB60 and the amount you wish to donate (£1/ £2/ £5/ £10) to 70070 or by visiting www.justgiving.com/dean-obrien2
Cancer is the toughest fight that many of us will have to face and no one should go through it alone. Macmillan Cancer Support wants to be there every step of the way to provide practical, medical, emotional and financial support to people living with cancer from the moment someone suspects a diagnosis throughout their journey and beyond. £4393 could fund a Macmillan Nurse Specialist for a month providing vital care and support to cancer patients and their families.
Should you have any questions or concerns about cancer please call our Macmillan Support Line (free phone) 0808 808 0000 Monday – Friday 9am – 8pm.
