New Yamaha Artist and Producer Sample Series Packs a Punch With Beatboxer Shlomo
Yamaha’s new Artist and Producer Sample Series continues with internationally acclaimed human beatboxer and World Loopstation Champion, Shlomo who has embraced Yamaha’s groundbreaking Tenori-on technology and created a unique sample pack to help Tenori-on and also DTX-M12 Electronic Percussion users.
A Guinness World Record holder who gave up astrophysics to perform his amazing vocal pyrotechnics, Shlomo has since won global acclaim and worked with some of the biggest names in music including Bjork, Damon Albarn, Jarvis Cocker, Martha Wainwright, Imogen Heap, The Specials, DJ Yoda and even comedians the Mighty Boosh. His latest project Shlomo and the Lip Factory, features 7 brilliant beatboxers and jazz singers, who come together to perform an inspiring mixture of soulful improvisations, intricately orchestrated compositions, and all-vocal renditions of classic tunes by everyone from Stevie Wonder to Paul Simon and the Prodigy. Other recent performances and projects include introducing Pulp, Chase & Status and Cee Lo Green at Glastonbury, collaborating with Ed Sheeran, and performing his unique one man show Mouthtronica for four weeks at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Shlomo’s fascinating live performance technique utilizes a loop pedal to sample his voice on the fly, enabling him to create and rework a huge range of original songs and well loved classics. As someone who has consistently pushed the boundaries of beatboxing and enjoys bringing his art form to new and unexpected audiences, it’s hardly surprising Shlomo declared himself a fan of the Tenori-on and was delighted to collaborate with Yamaha to create and share some of his samples for free with Tenori-on and DTX-M12 users.
Shlomo told us, “When Yamaha asked me to create a sample set for Tenori-on using just my voice I was super excited. I plugged in my mic and made a whole range of human beatbox sounds - including vocal drums, scratches, sound effects and weird synthy noises. It is really fun coming full circle - using just my voice to imitate machines that were built to imitate drums. I can't wait to hear what people come up with when they start using the sounds!”
Yamaha’s new Artist and Producer Sample Series debuted in December with cutting edge drum’n’bass, drumstep and dubstep supremo erb N dub.
