FREE MUSIC LESSONS IN SURREY AS CULTURE SECRETARY OPENS NEW YAMAHA MUSIC SCHOOL – THE MUSIC WORKS
Culture Secretary The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt is to open a state-of-the-art Yamaha Music School at a unique new music venue ‘The Music Works’ on Saturday 28thJanuary at 10.00 am. Following the Press Launch and Official Opening, ‘The Music Works’ will open to the public from 12.00 pm who will be able to tour the venue, meet the teachers and book a free first lesson to kickstart their musical ambitions.
Located just off the A3 in Portsmouth Road, Milford with private car parking, the new Yamaha Music School based at ‘The Music Works’ will offer daily and weekend tuition in Vocals, Drums, Guitar and Keyboards using six purpose-built music studios, fully soundproofed and equipped with all the latest Yamaha instruments. The converted warehouse also boasts a vocal recording studio and generous reception area for waiting parents and students.
Staff at ‘The Music Works’ are hoping to introduce as many children from as young as 6 and adults of all ages and abilities to music making. In addition to Yamaha’s ‘Encounters’ courses for Vocals, Drums, Guitar and Keyboards that teach students in a fun and practical way in groups, ‘The Music Works’ will also offer one to one tuition and in September 2012 will launch Yamaha’s flagship ‘Junior Music Course’ for Children aged 4-5 years.
All courses and tuition at ‘will follow a fully accredited syllabus - either Trinity College or Rock school meaning students can take exams from grade 1 to grade 8. For school students - grade 6 and above examination results count towards UCAS entry points. Yamaha has 70 ‘Music Points’ (smaller teaching centres) in the UK, but only 3 of the larger ‘Music Schools’, the nearest being in Oxfordshire, so this is a first for the region.
The man behind ‘The Music Works’ is Andy Hart, who nine years ago, after over 20 years in the corporate world, relinquished his position as BT Wholesale Director of Customer Service running 12 service centres and 2000+ people, to train with the English National Opera and become a professional opera tenor. The decision to pursue his passion for making music paid off and Andy who has starred in numerous productions and last year performed at the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent now runs a successful company providing opera and musical theatre productions for corporate events.
Andy Hart told us, “I am extremely proud and delighted that the Culture Secretary is to open this wonderful new facility for music making in Surrey. The aim was to establish a centre for musical excellence for the benefit of the community and as a Yamaha Music School, ‘The Music Works’ will be able to provide its students with the highest standards of tuition, drawing upon the heritage of Yamaha’s time-tested curriculum along with its exclusive teaching techniques and industry-leading teacher training. I hope as many people as possible will come along on Saturday 28th January from complete beginners to lapsed players to even more experienced musicians looking to sharpen their skills.”
Future plans also include a bursary scheme to support talented children and for ‘The Music Works’ to operate as a new music venue and creative hub, available for hire by event organisers and use by community groups.
