Forum helps automotive aftermarket stay legal
Tyre retailers, independent garages, franchised dealers and vehicle dismantlers are set to receive a host of help and advice to help them stay on the right side of the law at the Tyre Recovery Association’s (TRA) annual forum.
The free-to-attend event, which will be held on 25thMay at the Ardencote Manor Hotel in Warwickshire, will focus on company’s legal duty of care regarding responsible tyre recycling. Indeed, those failing in their obligations can face prosecution from the Environment Agency which can include hefty fines, community service or even prison sentences.
“Garages, tyre retailers and vehicle dismantlers play a critical role in ensuring that all used tyres in the UK are recycled in a responsible and legal manner,” explains Peter Taylor, Secretary General, Tyre Recovery Association. “Enforcement agencies are becoming much more effective in their prosecution of those who consciously avoid their responsibilities, as well as those who are simply ignorant of the current legislation. I would encourage anyone involved with the disposal of used tyres to attend so that they can learn about current best practice and be confident that they are operating within the law.”
The TRA works closely with the Environment Agency regarding responsible tyre recycling. The two parties will use the forum as a key element of their latest campaign, ‘A commitment to excellence’, which aims to educate everyone involved in the tyre recovery chain about their individual responsibilities.
Since 2006, across the whole of Europe there has been a complete ban of sending tyres, including shredded tyres, into landfill sites. Currently, more than 80% of the UK’s total annual arisings of 540,000 tonnes are recycled via the industry’s responsible recycler scheme. However, retailers are still at risk from unscrupulous operators looking to profit by operating outside of the law.
In recent years, the Environment Agency has invested significant resources in tackling these illegal players which has resulted in a number of high profile prosecutions. Just weeks ago, a Lincolnshire man was sent to prison for a total of 15 months for a series of illegal tyre dumping activities.

The Tyre Industry Federation Responsible Recycler Scheme is a uniquely successful initiative set up to ensure that all used tyres collected from any designated premises are re-used or recycled in ways which comply with UK and European statutory regulations. It is the largest voluntary tyre recovery programme inEurope.
Scheme members are subject to regular spot audit and are subject to the Scheme Charter.
