U.S. Figure Skating Membership Grows Over Previous Year

Membership tops 180,000-person mark

U.S. Figure Skating announced today its membership for the 2010–11 season increased 2 percent over its 2009–10 figures. For the membership cycle starting July 1, 2010, and ending June 30, 2011, the organization had 180,452 members, including 122,088 Basic Skills members, 57,883 full members and 481 Friends of Figure Skating members.

U.S. Figure Skating is composed of 688 member, collegiate and school-affiliated clubs, 1,016 Basic Skills programs, 575 synchronized skating teams and 46 Theatre On Ice teams.

around the country,” said Patricia St. Peter, president, U.S. Figure Skating. “The hard work and dedication of our member clubs, Basic Skills program
directors and instructors, coaches, athletes and volunteers make it possible to welcome more members into the U.S. Figure Skating family each year.”

The U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program continued to welcome new skaters in 2010–11, as membership exceeded 109,000 for the sixth consecutive year and experienced the second-highest enrollment in the program’s history (132,125 in 2005-06). In addition, the number of registered programs reached 1,000 for the first time. To date, Basic Skills instructors have taught nearly 2 million people how to skate. The Basic Skills Program contains numerous curriculums, including preschool, hockey, speedskating, adult, synchronized, pairs, ice dancing and Special Olympics/Therapeutic. During the 2010–11 season, Basic Skills enjoyed a membership increase of more than 3 percent. 

Sixty-six new Basic Skills programs were established, while 12 programs held memberships of more than 1,000 skaters. Two rinks, Wollman Rink Skating School (New York,
N.Y.) and Kettler Capitals Iceplex (Arlington, Va.), finished the year with over 2,000 members. Wollman Rink earned its eighth High Membership Award for having the largest Basic Skills membership in the country.
