UK Mail wins Special Category Training Award

UK Mail, one of the largest express delivery companies in the UK, walked away with the Training Award, at this year’s National Courier Awards, organised by the Institute of Couriers.
The Awards ceremony held on 18 September at the Institute of Directors in London recognised UK Mail’s apprenticeship scheme ‘AppForThat’, for a special category award for services to training. The National apprenticeship service NAS were also in support of this nomination. UK Mail’s engagement to apprenticeships was then awarded by the Transport minister Norman Baker.
Special category awards are for excellence and step change to the sector. The award is the highest grade in the National Courier awards, not in a shortlisting, this awards is brought by the panel of judges for an individual effort by person or company.
UK Mail’s apprentice scheme ‘AppForThat’ was initially trialled at their depots in Milton Keynes, Leeds, Runcorn and Croydon where young unemployed people were recruited to work in the Mail Sort Centres, as Customer Care Advisors or Warehouse Operatives. The apprentices are placed on a year-long training scheme where they gain a number of qualifications. The pilot has been so successful that it is now being rolled out across all 50 UK Mail depots across the country and customer care centres

We believe apprenticeships are at the heart of the economy and a great way to introduce young people into the world of work. It has been a busy 12 months and its fantastic the whole team and the company can be recognised in this way”.
Institute of Couriers, President Viscount, Lord Falkland, also commented, “UK Mail with their full pay to apprenticeships after three months’ probation has created a clear job route statement for the courier and logistics industry”.
