More Than Four Miles of Halloween-Themed Pathways Open for Families to Explore September 1

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. (August 28, 2012) – Autumn officially begins in one month, but it is just days before the traditional start of fall fun season kicks off in Dawson County in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of Georgia.  Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch opens for 2012 on Saturday, September 1, and will continue its Fall Celebration weekend on Sunday, September 2 and on Labor Day. This marks the 11th consecutive season for the family-operated, agri-tainment complex.

Three intricate pathways and two bridges make up the corn maze, which occupy a 12-acre field adjacent to the Etowah River. The trails measure close to five miles in length. This year’s corn maze design features a Halloween-themed collage with Cornelia Broominflight the friendly witch on her broom over a haunted house and pumpkin field.

Fall Celebration Opening Weekend the maze complex will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, September 2, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, September 3 (Labor Day holiday).  Special events at Uncle Shuck‘s Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch in 2012 include Foster Family Day September 8; Boy Scout Weekend Sept 29-30; Girl Scout Weekend Oct 6-7; and “Husks of Horror” Haunted Maze every Friday and Saturday in October (additional Haunted Maze nights on Sunday, August 28 and Wednesday, October 31).  Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze is open every weekend in September and November; the complex is open every day in October.

Georgia entrepreneurs Mike and Roxanne Pinzl, who reside in Alpharetta, Georgia, began the corn maze in 2002.  Maze attendance has grown from 15,000 customers in the first year to more than 40,000 visitors in 2011.  The Pinzls’ continue to use MazePlay, Inc for the design and cutting of the maze trails. MazePlay, based in Idaho, specializes in designing and cutting cornfield mazes in 40 states.

Returning on the festival grounds will be the popular Kiddie CORNer. This free activity area includes Tire Mountain, Tower Goat Walk, Soybean Maze and the Picnic Pavillion.  The tractor-drawn hayrides, feature a new 60-passenger wagon complete with wood benches and hay bales. There are also Corn-ference Rooms that groups can reserve for birthday parties, school field trips and groups.  Additional fee-based activities include the Corn Cannon, Bonfire area (weekends), festival food vendors (weekends), and Pumpkin Patch (October). Every weekend in October there will also be pony rides and face painting for children.

All prices remain unchanged this year. Admission to the corn maze continues to be $10 for anyone five years old and older; maze admission is free for children four and under. The tractor-drawn hay rides along the

Etowah River, which include access to the bonfire area, are $5 per person. The Cob Combo is a ticket for $13, which includes admission to the maze and the hay ride. Cost for the Haunted Maze is $13, which includes admission to the special one-mile trail and the other two non-haunted pathways. Proceeds from the Haunted Maze benefit Dawson County High School. Other fees are listed on the web site.

Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch is located only 40 minutes from metro Atlanta, just two miles west from the North Georgia Premium Outlet Mall on Georgia Highway 53. For more information, visit www.uncleshucks.com, or follow the progress of the maze on Facebook.
