Broadband – vital for society
The benefits of broadband and its wide and ever-increasing impact on individuals, organisations and society is the focus of a new book co-edited by Dr Jyoti Choudrie from the University of Hertfordshire.
‘Management of Broadband Technology Innovation’ is the first book to explore the capacity of broadband networks to enable new applications, the management of funding and developing broadband-enabled services, and the policy environment in which these networks are developed.
Dr Jyoti Choudrie, from the University of Hertfordshire’s Systems Management Research Unit (SyMRU), Business School, said: “Broadband has come a long way – and is firmly fixed in our future. It is vital for society – but, as with all other technologies, we need to understand both the positives and the negatives of its use.”
When people think of broadband, the internet immediately springs to mind - but broadband is so much more than that and it impacts on society in so many different ways. For example, broadband networks can be used to deliver healthcare or community-related services; to support better management of scarce energy resources through smart grids; to enable improved teleworking capacity; as well as opening up a world of new entertainment possibilities.
Written for industry, academic researchers, as well as policymakers, the book explores a wide range of issues associated with the use and deployment of broadband in different countries. It offers insights on broadband and its impact on society from the perspectives of Information Systems, Management, Strategy, and Communications Policy - and also how it will continue to impact on our lives into the future.
Dr Choudrie continued: “Broadband is not just a technology, but a utility that we all need – just like electricity or water. Issues that surround other utilities also apply to broadband – issues such as price, quality, accessibility and regulation. We need to ensure that broadband is provided to everyone so that we better understand its application and use in our daily lives.”
