The RSA, founded in 1754 as the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, is a politically independent organisation which invites experts from a broad range of industries and fields to help tackle social challenges. Notable past and present Fellows include Charles Dickens, Marie Stopes, Stephen Hawking, Karl Marx and David Attenborough.

On receiving the fellowship, Professor Laws said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

“The Society has a long and prestigious history and I look forward working with the Fellowship Community on a range of issues where my experience and skills may be helpful to others.”

Professor Laws’ research centres on how cognitive functions and processes relate to brain structure and function; notably for research on cognitive functioning in people suffering from neurological and psychiatric disorders.   In particular, his research on cognitive function in schizophrenia has received wide recognition and several awards. Most recently, his research has also focused on cognitive problems in Alzheimer's disease, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Professor Laws is a Chartered Psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
