UT Arlington LINK Lab receives funding for continued adaptive learning research
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Texas at Arlington’s Learning Innovation and Networked Knowledge Research Lab has received funding to support two postdoctoral students from Intel Corporation.
The $130,000 annual award is based on work already under way in the LINK Lab, particularly around personalized and adaptive learning, which is a growing subset of learning analytics.
“For schools and universities, adaptive learning holds the prospect of improving learner success, reducing degree completion time, and generating varied learning pathways,” said George Siemens, executive director of the LINK Lab. “To date, many school and university systems have made limited use of the data collected as learners interact with software, one another, and course content. Learning analytics holds the potential to greatly advance the science of learning.”
He added: “With the growing attention directed toward adaptive learning, including a range of new startups, these positions will provide valuable insight into practices that work and those that don’t.”
Particular focus will be on privacy and ethics of data collection and analytics, developing personal learner knowledge graphs, planning for various learner pathways, and balancing the relationship between technology and teacher support.
“In this modern age of education, physical space is no longer a limitation on higher education,” Siemens said, adding that the students’ research will include educational data mining, machine learning and discourse analysis. “These postdoctoral students will contribute significantly to the UT Arlington Strategic Plan, particularly regarding sustainable communities, global impact and data-driven discovery.”
