5G is a key to welfare technology

At the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, the project Teknikhuset – 5G i byggnad(The Technology House – 5G in building) is running. The purpose of the project is, among other things, that Sweden through smart digitalization shall be able to compensate for a reducing workforce and increasing demand on health and care services. 

The 5G development is vital in order for smart solutions for digital care to work even in places far outside the urban centers, places where these kinds of services might have the potential to do the most good. Camanio Care is therefore an active part in the development and knowledge exchange in many different ways, both through development projects of their own and as a partner in larger projects. 

In the fall of 2018, Camanio Care was awarded funds from Vinnova for a project, in cooperation with, among others, Mälardalens Högskola, with the aim of developing more user cases where 5G technology can make things easier. 

At KTH the development work is also ongoing through Teknikhuset – 5G i byggnad, a project with the aim of helping Sweden regain the global lead in mobile digitalization, through smart digitalization compensate for the increasing strain of health and care services due to an aging population, and to increase the use of mobile connection in general in buildings.

– The development within the 5G area is really exciting and we constantly see how new opportunities open for the welfare technology sector. We see it as natural to cooperate with the academy and researchers, both to contribute with our knowledge from the practical reality, and in exchange, gain knowledge of the latest research and be inspired to further develop our own solutions in the best way possible, says Catharina Borgenstierna, CEO at Camanio Care.

Sweden has adopted strategies for the further expansion and roll-out, and for several years has also worked actively with promoting and building infrastructure for broadband connection in the whole country. At the same time, there are still challenges. Within the project at KTH, it is judged that Sweden is about one year behind, for example, the USA and several countries in Asia, something the KTH project aims to reclaim. Through efforts in infrastructure for connectivity through the airwaves and focus on coordinating government entities, both national and regional, there are big opportunities for also managing this. 

– There is a huge potential in 5G for a country like Sweden. The response times can be shortened, and the bandwidth increased, even in places far from cable-bound infrastructure. We have seen that several of Camanio’s solutions, like the Giraff or Vital Smart Care, would gain immensely from the 5G technology once it is up and running. At the moment we see that there are three things that are crucial for the roll-out: broadband through the airwaves for the most rural areas, cooperation between sectors, and network planning for a cost-efficient roll-out. If these three all fall into place, the opportunities for a well working infrastructure for digital health and care lie open, says Bengt Simonsson at Teknikmarknad, the technology coordinator at KTH for the user organization Användarföreningen för välfärdsteknologi.

Several regional development projects will now be initiated in the coming years, in order to realize the roll-out and the services that can go through the 5G networks.
