£375,000 Mimer SQL Contract for Life Critical National Blood Service software The National Blood Service (NBS) has recently made a significant upgrade of their Mimer SQL system. The NBS is responsible for all blood collection in England and north Wales from the point of donation until issue to hospitals for transfusion, as well as providing a range of tissues and other services to hospitals. They use the PULSE system developed by the UK-based Savant Enterprises. The total order value for NBS upgrade of their Mimer SQL licenses exceeds £375,000. Mimer SQL is a database management system from Upright Database Technology in Sweden. The PULSE system, developed by Savant Enterprises, uses a Mimer SQL database containing in excess of 1 billion records and is growing at a rate of 8 millions per week. The life critical database, controlling 2.5 million blood donations per year, must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The NBS has been using the Mimer SQL database management system from Upright Database Technology since 1996. PULSE is also used by the blood transfusion services in Northern Ireland and Isle of Man. The NBS PULSE system has a community of more than 3,500 active users today, and future plans include providing access to PULSE over the Internet with the development of services to be delivered through the government's UK-Online initiative. As a result of these plans to broaden access to PULSE, the NBS has upgraded their Mimer SQL licenses. - Mimer SQL plays a very important role in NBS' life critical PULSE system, says Ian Henderson, Managing Director at Savant Enterprises, the developer of PULSE. - Our experience is that Mimer SQL rarely gives us a problem and has a very low maintenance overhead, so there's no need for any expensive database administrators to run the system, concludes Ian Henderson. - NBS and Savant are two of our most important partners, and we're of course very pleased with this important contract, says Per Harsem, CSO at Upright Database Technology. - This means that the recent success for Mimer SQL continues after several new important deals in Sweden and internationally. The PULSE system at NBS is also one of the best examples of how Mimer SQL is used in very large mission critical systems, concludes Per Harsem.
