Mimer SQL 9.2, World Champion of Multi-Lingual Support

Mimer SQL 9.2, World Champion of Multi-Lingual Support Upright Database Technology AB, Uppsala, Sweden, today announced the availability of Mimer SQL 9.2, the latest version of the company's database management system (DBMS). With the introduction of the extended multi-language support in Mimer SQL 9.2, providers of multi-lingual software will have a unique opportunity to handle many different languages simultaneously in one single application. The already high performance of Mimer SQL has also been further enhanced. As a tribute to UNESCO's work in promoting native languages, Mimer SQL 9.2 was released on UNESCO's International Mother Language Day on February 21 2003. Mimer SQL 9.2 is the first DBMS in the world with support for the new Unicode-3.2 standard from the Unicode consortium. This standard defines all alphabetical and non-alphabetical (ideographic) character sets of the world and supersedes the older and more limited standards used in many other DBMSs. Unicode-3.2 is implemented as a native data type in Mimer SQL 9.2, thus eliminating any conversion overhead. "We evaluated our competitors solutions but was rather disappointed with the poor functionality that their solutions offered. We decided to do it 'the right way' and when the Unicode 3.2 standard arrived in the spring of 2002 our choice was clear", says Åke Persson, the architect of the Mimer SQL 9.2 multi-lingual module, but also member of the ISO SQL standards committee. "Our language support is very powerful and flexible while still being very easy to use" continues Åke. Mimer SQL 9.2 also supports SQL:1999 Collations, again as the first DBMS in the world. SQL:1999 Collations is a standard for multi-lingual sorting. Additional to the support for Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and many other larger languages. Mimer SQL 9.2 also includes support for the European Committee for Standardization's (CEN) European Ordering Rules (EOR). There are also pre-defined support for many minority languages such as Catalan, Sami, Sorbian and Welsh. If however the language in use is not included in the pre-defined set, the Mimer SQL multi-lingual toolbox makes it simple to add support for a specific language in the Mimer SQL database manager. One of the main characteristics of Mimer SQL is high performance. This is even further enhanced in Mimer SQL 9.2, including enhancements in e.g. network access, data warehousing support and large-object (BLOB/CLOB) access.
