LOS ANGELES, October 20, 2011 – The USC Institute of Urology and USC Norris Cancer Hospital will be hosting the 2nd Annual L.A. Prostate Cancer 5K race scheduled for Sunday, November 6, 2011 at USC’s famed Tommy Trojan. The 5K is open to all levels of runners, joggers and walkers, and will be held at the University of Southern California, starting at 8:30 a.m.

The 5K was created to raise awareness about prostate cancer – the most common cancer among men aside from skin cancer – affecting more than two million men in the United States who are currently living with the disease right now. Because of the lack of knowledge and concern with the potential side effects of the treatment process, many men avoid treatment – despite effective therapy. About one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

“USC is honored to host this second annual 5K to benefit those affected by prostate cancer," said C. L. Max Nikias, president of USC. "Our support reflects the USC community's determination to bring this important health issue to the fore, as well as our ongoing commitment to advancing cancer research, prevention, and treatment."

Alongside KABC and Clear Channel Radio, the 5K supports the growing need to promote research for furthering the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. All proceeds and donations from this event will be dedicated to prostate cancer research at USC.

Last year, more than 232,000 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed,” said Dr. Inderbir S. Gill, professor and chairman of the USC Institute of Urology. “One new case of prostate cancer occurs every three minutes and a man dies from it every 19 minutes. Treatment is most effective when diagnosed early on, and early detection can save lives. Today, 2.2 million live with the disease.”

Celebrities expected to attend: Dana Wilkey (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite), Stephen Bishop (Moneyball), Mayra Leal (Arena), George Lazenby (James Bond in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service), Stefanie von Pfetten (Hallmark's Goodnight For Justice), Vanessa Branch (Orbit Gum Girl), Jared Kusnitz (Prom), Joe Slaughter (Step Up 3D), Scott Leibfried (Hell’s Kitchen), Tony Longo (Mulholland Dr.), Leroy Dixon (Olympian athlete), Rodney Martin (Olympian athlete), Danny Arroyo (Into the Night), Aldo Gonzalez (Sons of Anarchy), Danika Yarosh (A Christmas Wedding Tail), Zach Callison (Rock Jocks), Zachary Alexander Rice (Volkswagen Bug Piñata Boy), Jennessa Rose (Glee 3D Concert Movie), Temara Melek (Modern Family), Urbalist (artist and emcee), Wes Stevens (founder of Vox), Julianna Rose (Khumba), Jason Rosell (Fortune) and many more…

In addition to the 5K, there will be a health expo where attendees will learn the latest in prostate cancer treatments and research. The da Vinci robot will be on display highlighting the advanced surgical treatment system for cancer. Other activities will include live entertainment, and participants will receive free giveaways.
