WHY:              First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to kick off fifth installment of The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families - a free traveling USO tour exclusively for military families based on Sesame Workshop’s award winning Talk, Listen, Connect (TLC) initiative - at Joining Forces rally on April 14 in Columbus, Ohio.  Designed to show support and honor America’s service members and their families, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden will unveil a brand new Sesame Street character as well as the show’s new theme and look.

Gary Knell, CEO & President of Sesame Workshop, and Sloan Gibson, USO President, will be available for interviews in Columbus, OH, starting the morning of April 14.  Leaders available to discuss support of Joining Forces initiative, ongoing partnership, debut of tour’s fifth installment and past tour success.

The new show features a brand new Sesame Street character named Katie - a military child relocating to a new place, and a new theme, the show will use music, crowd interaction and familiar faces to connect with military kids.  This year’s tour showcases the power of friendship when Elmo and his Sesame pals, help Katie open up about her fears and excitement in dealings with change and making new friends.  The show comprises a 25-minute character performance with special giveaways and outreach materials for those who attend.

The Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families made its debut in July 2008 to help families deal with the challenges of deployment and homecomings.  Since then, the tour has taken that message to more than 192,600 troops and military families in 33 different states and nine countries, performing 315 shows on 90 military bases. The tour’s latest installment will officially kick off at Fort Wainwright in Alaska on April 23 and wrap up in Spain in September.  The tour is expected to deliver approximately 110 shows on 43 bases in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Korea, Turkey, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Spain.
