USO celebrates grand opening of newest stateside center at Fort Campbell, KY

Fort Campbell, KY. (December 1st, 2011) – In a celebration featuring video gaming inside a Huey Helicopter, Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders and a vocal performance from a Nashville recording artist, the USO celebrated the opening of the newest stateside center yesterday- USO Fort Campbell.

The center will support the men, women and families of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the third largest military population in the Army as well as the home of the 101stAirborne “Screaming Eagles.”

USO Fort Campbell, located in a former NCO Club, will provide signature USO programs and services such as free computers, Internet connectivity, telephones, snacks, beverages and the United Through Reading’s Military Program. The USO began working with the command to bring a USO Center to the installation more than a year ago.

“And like many of us in uniform and now retired and out of uniform and family members, we’ve all used these services somewhere in the world,” said Col. Perry C. Clark, Fort Campbell Garrison Commander. “At an airport or at a post or at a base, we’ve all used it. And you know they always been first class, very well done, very well run, very well organized and we at Fort Campbell are very fortunate to see this great organization come here.”

The USO operates more than 160 locations worldwide with a presence on military installations, in airports, as well as remote forward operating bases in Afghanistan. Last year, USO locations were visited nearly 8-million times by service members and their families.

“This is your USO,” said Sloan Gibson, USO President and CEO. “This is a place for you to call home. We want you to feel that way about it. We want you to feel like it’s all yours. We’re here only for one reason: we are here for you.”

In addition to recognizing the many donors and volunteers who supported the center opening, the USO delivered a special “thank you” to the members of the 159thCombat Aviation Brigade, Bravo Company 563D Aviation Support Battalion for their efforts in restoring the UHI Huey that is located inside the center. The young soldiers began assembling the helicopter in August. Microsoft, in addition to donating Kinect systems and games to the center, outfitted the helicopter with four gaming systems.

USO Fort Campbell is open Monday through Thursday 10am to 8pm and Friday and Saturdays from 10am to 10pm.
