A royal and ceremonial lustre at sea, a popular and festive atmosphere on land in the centre of Malmö – such was the inauguration on Tuesday of Lillgrund, the world’s third largest marine wind power park.

King Carl XVI Gustaf was in charge of the official opening ceremony that took place on board a ship in Öre-sund. Also present was Sweden’s Enterprise and Energy Minister Maud Olofsson as well as Vattenfall’s CEO Lars G Josefsson and head of Nordic operations, Hans von Uthmann.

Coinciding with this event, the general public were invited to a large-scale opening party on land. A giant screen set up on Malmö’s Stortorget showed what was happening on board the vessel in Öresund. Vattenfall invited the public to ice creams, music and stage performances. Knowledge about energy was available at Vattenfall’s Energy Tent while on the square there was the chance of participating in different activities such as the Energy Hunt Walk. The Energy Games offered participants the opportunity of jumping on hop balls, climbing the pole, capturing the wind and cycling on an energy cycle.

”With Lillgrund, Sweden’s electricity production from wind power is increased six-fold. Lillgrund is the world’s third largest wind power park at sea and thereby Vattenfall owns two of the three largest offshore parks worldwide. The other one is Horns Rev in Denmark. We are already one of the largest operators and we in-tend to become even bigger. One half of the SEK 80 billion that we are planning to invest in Nordic electricity production over the next ten years will go to wind power,” explains Vattenfall’s head of Nordic operations, Hans von Uthmann.

All 48 wind turbines in Lillgrund’s wind power park are now connected up to the electricity grid and produce renewable household power for more than 60 000 homes.
