Being one of the 42 companies participating in the 3C (Combat Climate Change) initiative, Vattenfall tomorrow, 5 June, joins an advertisement campaign in newspapers throughout the world. The campaign intends to stress the need for political action to combat climate change ahead of the political summit meeting in Heiligendamm, which will begin on 6 June.

At the summit meeting in Heiligendamm, leaders from the G8 nations and Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa will attempt to find joint solutions to the climate problem. The 42 companies in the 3C initiative are acting jointly to underline the importance of the issue and to emphasise how vital it is to take immediate measures to dramatically reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

“This group of companies represents a considerable force; it sees the problem and wants to solve it in co-operation with world leaders. The aim of the 3C initiative is to create scope for wise and responsible decisions,” says Vattenfall’s President and CEO Lars G Josefsson. “We have agreed that the participating companies will publish advertisements in daily papers on 5 June, which has been designated World Environment Day. Vattenfall will publish our joint message in the countries where we have our operations – Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Poland.”

The companies involved in the 3C initiative have a total turnover of more than EUR 1 100 billion, which is ten times the EU budget. They have four million employees in 220 countries, and come from 11 of the 13 nations in G8+5. Eighteen of the participating companies generate electricity and together account for 15-16 per cent of the world’s electricity supply.

The companies have agreed on nine principles as a basis for a global consensus on curbing climate change. They call jointly on the leaders of the world to adopt commercially-viable solutions, to develop technology and to make market-based investments.

The companies participating in the 3C initiative are: ABB, Alcan Inc., Alstom, Areva, Bayer, British Petroleum BP, British Sky Broadcasting Ltd, Centrica, CEZ Group, China National Offshore Oil Corp., Citigroup Inc., Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Post, DONG Energy, Duke Energy Corporation, E.ON AG, EnBW AG, Endesa S.A., Enel, Eskom, Fortum, General Electric Co, Hitachi Ltd, Iberdrola, Lufthansa, Munich Re Group, Norske Skog, NRG Energy, Nuon, Otto Group, PG & E Corp., PNM Resources, RAO UESR, Reuters, SAS, SAP, Siemens, SUEZ, Tata Power Company Ltd, Wallenius Lines, Vattenfall.
