The Swedish Government has decided to grant Vattenfall permission to build the Kriegers flak Wind Farm in the southern part of the Baltic Sea. This may become the world's largest offshore wind farm.

"Our ambition is that Vattenfall should play a leading role in Sweden's efforts to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the country's power generation mix. The Government's decision will enable us to intensify our work of exploring the scope available for building a wind farm at Kriegers flak. This would then be our biggest wind power investment so far," says Göran Lundgren, head of Power Generation at Vattenfall Nordic. The plant may be the largest in the world and enable us to generate 2.1 terawatt hours (2100 million kilowatt hours) of electrical energy annually, which corresponds to the annual domestic electricity demand of 440 000 households. Kriegers flak is outside the Swedish territorial waters but in the marine economic zone in the southern part of the Baltic Sea, around 30 kilometres south of the Swedish city of Trelleborg. Permission is needed for the plant in accordance with the Law on the Swedish Economic Zone. The Government decision enables Vattenfall to proceed with the project design work and to apply for examination in accordance with the Environmental Code, the Electricity Law, and the Law on Services Access Rights.
