Vattenfall Power Consultant has been awarded the assignment to deliver detailed engineering of the civil works for the Changuinola I Hydroelectric Power Project in the Republic of Panama.

Panama is in the process of modernisation throughout the whole country and thus increasingly in need of energy. The new Changuinola Plant will be located in the Changuinola River in the Bocas del Toro province, 500 km north west of Panama City, a province particularly high on the governments´ priority list.

The hydro power station will have an installed capacity of approximately 223 MW. The total energy production is expected to reach over 1,040 GWh/year.

The civil works on site have already started with access roads, camps and excavation works and the project is scheduled for completion in the end of 2010.

“This is the result of our previous successful work in the Esti Hydroelectric Project in Panama that finished in 2003,” says Mr Jacob Lundberg, Executive Vice President of Vattenfall Power Consultant and Head of International division.

“We are very pleased to yet again work for AES as sub-contractors in this joint venture,” Mr Lundberg continues. “And we certainly carry Vattenfall’s traditions and expertise forward and out into the world as we have been building hydro power stations for almost a hundred years.”

Pihl & Søn and MT Højgaard forming the Changuinola Civil Works Joint Venture and Alstom of Brazil.Project features includes an RCC Dam with a height of 90 m, power intake, a pressurized headrace tunnel with a length of 4300 m, surface powerhouse, switchyard, substation and a mini hydropower plant located at the dam foot. The total installed capacity will be 223 MW. The total energy production is expected to reach over 1040 GWh/year.
