For the fourth consecutive year Vattenfall published a comprehensive sustainability report today describing the Group’s activities during 2006. In the Swedish Ministry of Enterprise, Energy, and Communications recent review of the state-owned companies’ sustainability reporting for 2005, Vattenfall’s report ranked as the best.

The report addresses the most important issues that Vattenfall currently faces with respect to the environment and social responsibility: climate change, production safety, renewable energy, future recruitment challenges, the future of coal and market integration developments.

Achievements in 2006 include:
· Ambitious goal to cut CO2 emissions by half by 2030, compared with the base year 1990
· Contribution to the global agenda for combating climate change through the foundation of the 3C-initiatve – A business leaders’ initiative to combat climate change
· Construction of the pilot for the “CO2-free power plant” started
· Acquisition of large wind power facilities in Denmark
· Ranked “Best employer” in Sweden

In the preface to the report CEO Lars G Josefsson outlines Vattenfall’s ambitious plan to cut carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2030 compared with the base year 1990.

“The plain truth is that coal will continue to play a central role in energy supply in the foreseeable future, but the fact that Vattenfall’s electricity and heat generation in Germany and Poland today are almost entirely based on coal does not mean that we are silently accepting the climate impact. At Vattenfall we are working steadily at reducing our CO2 emissions by improving the efficiency of our plants and introducing new, modern technology,” he says.

Information about Vattenfall’s results in the field of sustainability follow the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, the most commonly used standard for sustainability reporting in the world, used by more than 1,000 enterprises.

New features this year include a study of last year’s report that was conducted to find out how the report was received by the company’s stakeholders and that the reporting section is only published online at www.vattenfall.com/csr
