Vattenfall's contract with Vestas eases bottleneck for wind power
Vattenfall signed a general agreement with wind power supplier, Vestas, for delivery of wind turbines. During 2010, Vattenfall will purchase wind turbines with a capacity of 100 MW. The contract value is in the billions and it also includes service. Besides shorter licensing processes for wind power, the contract also provides the prerequisites for achieving Vattenfall's wide-ranging wind power initiative in the Nordic region.
"This contract eases the supplier bottleneck for wind power. It will enable us to implement the initiative to increase the share of renewable energy sources by expanding wind power," says Anders Dahl, Head of Vattenfall Vindkraft.
Vattenfall aims at increasing the share of renewable energy by 10 TWh within a 10-year period. Wind power will be responsible for 8 TWh. That corresponds to approximately 1,500 wind turbines and household electricity supplied to 1.6 million homes. Vattenfall is investigating suitable areas to establish wind power both on land and at sea in the Nordic region. Electricity production recently began at the Lillgrund wind power farm, the largest such facility in Sweden to date and the third largest such facility at sea in the world. Currently, Vattenfall has between 20 and 30 large wind power projects underway. This number is increasing every month. This requires access to wind power turbines in a business environment where there is tough competition with other energy companies and contractors throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
