Vattenfall's power station in Myllykoski inaugurated Finland's Minister for Trade and Industry, Sinikka Mönkäre, inaugurated Vattenfall's CHP plant in Myllykoski on Thursday. Vattenfall's President and CEO, Lars G Josefsson, also spoke at the inauguration. "This power plant project is an excellent example of the advantages to be gained when business partners concentrate on their core competence. Apart from the financial benefits achieved, this co-operation also entails significant environmental benefits," said Lars G Josefsson. The new power station is a central part of the energy partnership agreement that Vattenfall and Myllykoski Paper Oy concluded in the summer of 1999. In line with this agreement, Vattenfall bought and modernised the paper mill's power plant, and is now supplying heat and electricity on long-term contracts. The annual supplies amount to approximately 900 GWh of heat and approximately 400 GWh of electricity, depending on the paper production levels. Vattenfall began supplying electricity at the beginning of October last year, and took over operational responsibility for the steam power electrical plant at the beginning of February this year. The value of the energy supplies over the entire contract period will amount to over FIM 2 billion. The power station is Vattenfall's largest generation investment in Finland and totals just over FIM 400 million. The new power plant will have very positive environmental effects. The mill's coal-fired boilers have been phased out. Coal will be replaced in part by biofuels. The power plant will also produce flue gases for Speciality Minerals Nordic Oy's filler plant, and district heat for the town of Anjalankoski. The Ministry of Trade and Industry has awarded the project energy grants of FIM 22 million for environmental reasons.
