Vattenfall to invest a billion in the environment Greater energy recovery will provide heat for Uppsala residents Vattenfall's Board of Directors has decided to invest roughly one billion SEK in a plant for increased incineration of sorted waste in Uppsala. The plant will have advanced purification that meets strict environmental requirements. The new incineration plant will increase the energy recovery from waste by 30 per cent to 360,000 tonnes of waste per year. The plant will be in operation by 2005. The decision is conditional on the necessary permits being granted. From and including this year, it is forbidden to dump combustible waste at landfill sites. This means that there is a lot of waste that must be dealt with. Viewed overall, the incineration capacity available in Sweden is lower than the demand. According to a survey by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, both recovery and incineration must increase if the ban on dumping is to be met. The investment in Uppsala provides a significant contribution in this respect. Sweden has both the knowledge and the possibility to deal with its waste in an environment-friendly way. The sorting of waste leads to better materials recycling and better fuel. Incineration is an efficient and sustainable way of dealing with waste. Vattenfall Vdrme Uppsala has substantial competence in the area of waste incineration and provides a safe delivery site for suppliers of waste. This investment, which is part of Vattenfall's major investment programme in Sweden, will reinforce Uppsala's position as a centre of competence for Swedish district heating. "This investment in modern technology for increased waste incineration is an important investment in reliable and environment-friendly district heating for Uppsala. By replacing other fuels with waste, our total emissions will be lower," says Gerold Lange, President of Vattenfall Vdrme Uppsala. "We are very keen to ensure that all environmental aspects are taken into consideration, and will do everything to make sure that this is a plant that Uppsala residents can be proud of". The plant will be built adjacent to the present incineration plant and will have an incineration capacity of 22 tonnes per hour, with an output of 78 MW of steam and district heat. Procurement is underway and building will begin in autumn 2002. From Vattenfall's Press Office, telephone: +46 8 739 50 10.
