Veidekke has signed a contract for renovation and construction of new premises at the Manglerud Centre. The contract has a value of NOK 100 million.

SATS
Part of the project includes reconstruction of the former Manglerud House from a community facility and festivity hall into modern premises for SATS, a fitness centre chain. The centre has a high ceiling, and a new, dividing floor totalling 170 square metres has already been built by Veidekke in order to utilize this space. A new entrance hall in glass and aluminium will be built.

During the reconstruction work a lot of asbestos has been removed. Bricks from the demolition of several walls have been sorted and cleaned for reuse. "We have taken out boards that contained asbestos, and have removed approximately 70 pipes with asbestos insulation," says the project manager, Mr. Helge Hansesveen.

"There are restrictions on noise and dust producing work such as hammering and heavy drilling. Out of consideration for the shops, we may only do this kind of work from seven a.m. until the shops open at ten o'clock," Mr. Hansesveen explains.

SATS will move into their new premises sometime in January 2001.

The shopping centre
The construction at the shopping centre includes new premises of 4,300 square metres and a new entrance hall covering two floors. The first floor in the already existing part of the building will be extended by 870 square metres. There will also be a new wing covering two floors built on rock. The new premises will be ready to be furnished by the tenants, and will also be used as temporary premises for the shops that will have to move out during the construction period.

The new facade of the building consists of frame work covered with brick, glass and aluminium. A new glass ceiling totalling 700 square metres will be constructed, as well as a new receiving area for deliveries and a garbage room. Two escalators will be moved and replaced; a new elevator shaft will be built, as well as new stairs and entrances. The technical systems for the whole centre will be upgraded.

"This is a demanding job because we have to work in a shopping centre which will be open to the public throughout the construction period. Therefore, we must take special care of safety and the environment for the tenants and the public," Mr. Hansesveen explains.
