A pioneer Factory for Production of Bio Fuel opened in Trondheim

A bio fuel factory, the first of its kind, was opened at Bjørka in Trondheim, Tuesday 18 June, by Anne Kathrine Slungård, chairperson of the municipality. The factory produces bio fuel based solely on waste wood. This represents a milestone for both the waste and the energy sectors. The factory has been designed to produce 10,000 briquettes per year from wooden waste. This is equivalent to 30 GWh and thus reduced CO2emissions of 10,000 tonnes per year. Considering the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste wood that are deposited every year, this offers prospects for substantial reductions in CO2-emissions. Additional factories are currently being planned.
The briquettes produced at Trondheim Biobrensel AS are used as fuel for a special bio-energy plant situated on the site of the Norwegian State Railway's (NSB) workshop at Marienborg. Owners of the bio-energy plant are NSB Eiendom and Trondheim Energiverk (TEV). The objective is to provide NSB with environmentally friendly energy and at the same time link the plant to TEV's own district heating system which supplies heating to institutions such as RIT 2000 (the Hospital Development Project, Central Norway), Lerkendal football stadium and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Today, waste wood is piling up in deposits all over the country. Through this project, however, a waste problem has been turned into an energy solution. The government is prioritising increased use of bio-energy focusing on the environment. This project is a good example of environmentally friendly efforts working hand in hand with commercial interests.

The investment amounts to approximately NOK 15 million including State subsidies of NOK 1.5 million. The annual production has been estimated to approximately 10,000 tonnes. This is equivalent to an energy production of approximately 30 GWh. As this will replace oil fuel, it means an annual reduction of CO2 emissions of about 10,000 tonnes.

The factory makes briquettes from sorted, pure wooden waste, and is the first factory of its kind with large-scale production of bio fuel based solely on wood. An agreement has been signed with Trondheim Energiverk (power plant) to purchase the bio fuel.

A supply contract for raw material has been signed with the municipal company Rekom, which on its part has contracts with local suppliers such as Trondheim Renholdsverk (public cleansing department) and Innherred Renovasjon (dust contractor).

Bio-El AS and Veidekke Gjenvinning AS each own 50 percent of the production company Trondheim Biobrensel AS. The owners of Bio-El AS are several major Norwegian power plants with the same business idea, namely using waste as a source of energy. Veidekke Gjenvinning AS is the second largest waste recycling company in Norway. It operates in all parts of the country, and includes 14 companies. Veidekke Gjenvinning is the leading company in Norway within product development from waste fractions.
