Today, an international framework agreement was signed by Veidekke, Fellesforbundet (The Norwegian United Federation of Trade Unions, Norsk Arbeidsmandsforbund (The Norwegian Union of General Workers) and the IFBWW (The International Federation of Building and Wood Workers) with the aim to secure trade union and social rights of employees working on Veidekke's projects.
This is the first time a Norwegian construction company has signed such an agreement, and it is one of the first of its kind in the world. The agreement is based on a mutual desire and commitment to ensure and further develop respect forhuman rights as well as trade union rights built up through a number of work related agreements.

"We regard this agreement as a positive initiative in our work to improve cooperation and interaction throughout our company," says President and CEO Terje R. Venold. "This agreement is a good foundation for our work to achieve value creating teamwork at all levels of our operations," he adds.

The agreement is based on the rights defined in the UN's Declaration of Human Rights, the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and the OECD guidelines on Multinational Companies. The parties commit themselves to contribute to achieving continuous improvements within the areas of working conditions, health and safety standards and environmental performance on Veidekke's projects worldwide. The parties have a common and mutual responsibility to achieve these goals through active and constructive cooperation.

"For us in the Norwegian United Federation of Trade Unions it is a matter of course that workers' rights are looked after through laws and regulations, but, unfortunately, this is not the case in all parts of the world. We are, therefore, pleased that Veidekke has now taken the responsibility to protect the rights of its employees globally, "says union leader Kjell Bjørndalen, a statement that is supported by Erna Dynge, Head of the Norwegian Union of General Workers.
