Motorway in Sweden to be Opened 10 Months Ahead of Schedule

The opening of the new section of the E4 motorway near Uppsala north of Stockholm was scheduled for October 2007. The opening will, however, take place before Christmas this year, thanks to good construction weather and speedy work by the contractors, Veidekke and VP-Väg (the Swedish Public Roads Administration's construction company).

"The fact that the construction work will be completed 10 months ahead of schedule is sensational. There are several reasons for the shorter construction period, but I particularly wish to commend all our employees who have done a fantastic job in partnership with our suppliers. We have also had two great summer seasons with hot, dry weather and this has been a big help," states Project Manager Roar Tverå, Veidekke.

The new 24-kilometre road section will be opened on 21 December. It is a part of the largest motorway construction project ever in Sweden: the 78-kilometre E4 between Uppsala and Mehedeby. The total price of the project amounts to just over 3 billion SEK, while the contract price for the 37-kilometre stretch that Veidekke has built in partnership with VP-Väg is 1.35 billion SEK.

The earlier opening of the road section means a socio-economic gain of 65 million SEK. Thanks to this new stretch of road three people will be saved from serious injury or death, according to the Public Road Administration's statistics. In addition to having a safer road, drivers will save about 30 minutes in travelling time because they are able to avoid the Uppsala bottleneck.
