Training is worth the effort: African Building Project Wins Prize for Excellent HSE-Work

On Thursday 7 March, a Tanzanian building project was awarded Veidekke's HSE-Prize for 2001. During a ceremony at Veidekke's head office in Oslo, two representatives of the project, Safety Officer Mr. Charles Mlowola and Project Manager Mr. Simon England, were presented the HSE-Prize by Mr. Torbjørn Berntsen, former Norwegian Secretary of State for the Environment.

The building project "British High Commission", which is run by Veidekke's subsidiary, Noremco, was awarded the prize for its excellent work within health, safety and environment (HSE). Noremco is erecting an embassy building for the European Union and some European countries. After more than 700 000 hours of operation the project is still without injuries among their workforce. This is rather special not only by Tanzanian but also by Norwegian standards. The jury emphasises that the African project and their excellent HSE-work is setting new standards for safety work in Tanzanian, if not also in African, construction industry.

The outstanding results can be ascribed to a structured training programme, "On the Site Training", which has been developed in cooperation with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and local authorities. The training programme covers work supervision and HSE issues, and focuses among other things on disease preventing measures as well as information about nutrition and special diseases, such as HIV, Aids and malaria. Weekly site meetings, inspired teamwork and involvement characterise the project. Safety delegates have been appointed among the employees, which is not customary in Tanzania. On the project, special safety groups have been organised to deal with first aid/emergency treatment and fire extinction. All employees attend HSE-courses, and periodic training, including simulation of injuries and rescue operations, is carried out. Local HSE campaign posters have been prepared both in Swahili and in English.

The jury gives special honour to the project's management for actively focusing on the living conditions and family situation of the employees.
