Veidekke: Building Mediebyen in Stavanger
Veidekke has been awarded the commission to build the office and commercial building Mediebyen at Nytorget in Stavanger for SVG Property AS. The 11,500 square metre building will be occupied by NRK and Stavanger Aftenblad, among others. The contract is a design and build contract valued at NOK 330 million excluding VAT.
“It’s really satisfying to start the construction of Mediebyen. This is a project we have been working on for a long time, in close cooperation with SVG Property, Ghilardi+Hellsten and other partners, and we have been through a long zoning process. This is an attractive project that will be a key part of the cityscape going forward, and we’re looking forward to taking on the task,” says district manager Bendik Aarstad at Veidekke Bygg Rogaland.
“City centre development is important to SVG Property AS, which has a strategy of owning its buildings well into the future. Starting this important transformation project is something we have been looking forward to for a long time,” says General Manager of SVG Property, Tonje Rosenvold. “It will be a great building for Mediebyen, but also for other tenants who want space in an attractive new city centre building at the vibrant Nytorget square,” she adds.
The tenants NRK and Aftenbladet will occupy the second and third floors of the building, while the top three floors remain vacant for the time being. A catering concept and meeting places are planned in the entrance zone from Nytorget. The underground parking facility will include changing rooms, bike parking and parking for NRK and Aftenbladet’s official cars, as well as technical spaces for ventilation and an energy centre. A separate energy centre will be established with geothermal wells under the building. The project will be BREEAM certified as class Excellent in addition to meeting FutureBuilt’s circularity requirements.
“We are very pleased that all permits and the contract with Veidekke have been concluded. It will be an exciting project to follow for the whole city, as we want to provide a building adapted to the site at the portal to this popular part of the city centre,” says Tore André Eide, Development Manager with developer SVG Property. “We have worked closely with Veidekke and Teqva for several years to develop a complex building while also facing increasing interest rates and construction costs. The contractors have participated in good processes along the way, and as a developer, we commend the effort and creativity involved in getting this over the finish line,” Eide concludes.
The demolition work is already well underway at the construction site, and the project is scheduled for completion in June 2026. The contract is included in Veidekke’s order book for Q2 2024.
