Veidekke Entreprenør AS has signed a contract with Aibel AS to undertake work at the onshore facility near Kårstø, which will provide electricity to the Johan Sverdrup field in the North Sea. The value of the contract is NOK 150 million excluding VAT.

Electrification of oil and gas installations with electricity from land is an important measure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase the efficiency of oil production in the North Sea.  Electrification of the Norwegian continental shelf is in keeping with the authorities' long-term goal to reduce CO2 emissions from the petroleum industry. The platforms on the Johan Sverdrup field will be among the first on the Norwegian continental shelf where polluting gas turbines at sea are replaced by clean, renewable electricity from land.

Statoil has awarded Aibel the main contract to build the electrification plant at Haugsneset  near Kårstø. Veidekke has been chosen by Aibel to undertake work such as construction of infrastructure, ground works for four kilometres of cable trenches for electricity cables and construction of a rectifier station, a pumphouse and landfall for a cooling plant. The contract also includes ground works a further identical rectifier station.

Work has already commenced, and is scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2017.
