Veidekke ASA: Construction job at the proton centre in Bergen

Veidekke has been commissioned by Helse Bergen HF to carry out the groundworks for the new proton centre at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen. The contract is a design and build contract with a value of NOK 116 million, excluding VAT.

Veidekke will prepare the site for the new building, which entails demolishing an existing parking facility, securing the rock face behind the building and blasting a 650 metres tunnel and 60 metres lift shaft to the central building to link the proton centre to the rest of the hospital.

The new proton centre will be located in Haukelandsbakken, just above the lower station for the Ulriksbanen aerial tramway. Proton therapy is a more accurate form of therapy than traditional radiation therapy, and results in less of the healthy tissue being harmed and that more patients can live a normal life after cancer treatment. In parallel with construction in Bergen, a corresponding centre will be built at Radiumhospitalet in Oslo.

Work is currently starting up, and completion is scheduled for February 2022. Completion of the proton centre is scheduled for 2024.
