Veidekke ASA: Signs new contract in Stockholm’s first massive wood residential block
Veidekke is starting construction of a new project in Cederhusen, Stockholm's first massive wood residential area. The project, with occupancy estimated for the autumn of 2022, constitutes the last of a two-part design-and-build contract for Folkhem with a contract value of approx. SEK 108 million.
Cederhusen comprises two residential blocks, and construction is now starting of the second building on the first block. Of the ten above-ground storeys, the top eight will be built from massive wood and the bottom two from concrete with cedar siding. Wooden buildings bind CO2, weigh considerably less, make less noise during construction and are quieter to live in.
“We are excited about the market’s reception of the project, which enables us to develop the entire first block in one go. This is a very unique project and an important symbol of Folkhem and of wood construction. Veidekke has set high and clear ambitions for the project, and has an excellent team in place. Their commitment bodes well for the implementation of the project, as well as for bringing to Stockholm something absolutely awesome, which will forever and always be its first inner-city massive wood residential block,” says Anna Ervast Öberg, business and product development manager at Folkhem.
“We appreciate the opportunity to further utilise the expertise we have built through this amazing and important project. I am proud to see it grow and I look forward to continuing to take part in the collaboration and commitment that has made the project possible,” says David Grimheden, technical and environmental manager at Veidekke Sweden.
Cederhusen is under construction at the new metro exit in Hagastaden. When completed, the residential area will comprise four 10 to13-storey residential buildings over two blocks built above tunnels for the E4 / E20 motorway.
In connection with the project, a collaborative group has been established with participants representing all links in the production chain. The group is working to better understand how to GHG-optimise all activities and processes necessary for a project like this to go from the drawing board via construction to a move-in ready house. Two additional research projects studying climate-optimised construction will be initiated in 2021.
The contract was included in the order book for the fourth quarter 2020.
