Today Minister of Education and Research Kristin Halvorsen broke the first ground for the 160 student bedsits Veidekke is building for Studentsamskipnaden (the student welfare organisation) in Oslo and Akershus (SiO). This will be a turnkey contract valued at NOK 100 million, excluding VAT.
The student homes will be built in the Grünerløkka district in the centre of Oslo, and the project comprises eight floors of student bedsits, a ground floor for commercial activities and parking in existing neighbouring buildings. The building will be built directly on bedrock and with a structure of poured in place concrete with brick façades.
The project has a modern expression that is well adapted to the existing brick district from the interwar period and surrounding buildings from the late 1800s. The building will be designed with consideration towards being highly visible in the area.
Construction work is currently starting, and the flats will be ready in the summer of 2014.
