Veidekke Entreprenør AS, Special Projects, has signed a contract with the Public Roads Administration for part of the development of the Halsenøy/mainland connection in the west of Norway. Veidekke's contract is for the stretch of the trunk road between Sunde and Tofte in Kvinnherad.
The contract covers the construction of a 4.2 kilometre-long subsea road tunnel and a new road above ground, a total of 6.3 km, linking Sunde on the mainland with Tofte on the island of Halsenøy.

The work will commence immediately and be completed at the beginning of 2008. The contract price is NOK 253 million, excl. VAT.

The subsea tunnel and access roads will give the approximately 2,300 inhabitants on Halsenøy a ferry-free connection with the mainland. When the road is finished, the present ferry service between Skjersholmane, Ranavik and Sunde will become a pure shuttle service between Ranavik on Halsenøy and Skjersholmane on Stord. Travelling time from the centre of Halsenøy to the mainland in Kvinnherad will be reduced by 30-35 minutes.
