Noremco, Veidekke's East African contracting company, has been awarded a contract of NOK 170 million for the construction of new co-location offices for the embassies of Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain and the European Commission in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. For the first time several European embassies will be located in the same building. In connection with this contract Noremco intends to increase its focus on local transfer of knowledge and training within areas such as management, health, safety and environment as well as information about Aids.

The new EU-embassy will consist of a six-storey building with a total floor area of about 7,000 square meters. The embassy will be situated in the centre of Dar es Salaam, and will be a modern and state-of-the-art construction. The building will be completed by 8 August 2002.

The fact that such a big project will be situated in the vicinity of Noremco's headquarters in Dar es Salaam facilitates the training and skills development among the local employees. Special attention will be given to management. Training will be based on Veidekke's concept of "On site training".

"A natural part of management training is education within health, safety and environment. This will give us the opportunity to implement the Norwegian Minister of Development's request to make information about AIDS a part of the training. We hope to work in close co-operation with the Norwegian Development Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, especially to be able to draw on the different experiences gained from previous knowledge transferring efforts in developing countries", Mr. Tore Bråten says.

Mr. Bråten emphasises the fact that Noremco's focus on local training is necessary for continued activity in the region. Over the last years the number of Norwegian and European employees in Noremco has been substantially reduced and replaced with local employees and trained by the company.
