The municipality of Nøtterøy has entered into an agreement with Veidekke Entreprenør AS to build Smidsrød Helsehus in Nøtterøy. This is a turnkey contract worth NOK 175 million ex. VAT.

The new health centre will have 80 nursing home places, a day centre, a medical centre and common functions. 16 of the nursing home places will be located in a separate building for patients with dementia. The whole centre will be constructed as a low-energy building in energy class B and the total area will be approximately 8,000 m2. The plot will feature a well-developed exterior with park areas, roads and car parking.

The nursing home will be established according to a so-called health house model. Nøtterøy is keen to establish a centre that will maintain values like respect, cooperation, creativity and expertise. The centre will work closely with hospitals, university colleges, the Sjølyst Centre, general practitioners and the home-visiting care services. Most of the nursing home places will be for short-term residents with the focus on getting home quickly, while some are intended as long-term places, with the emphasis on peace and quiet, an easy overview, predictability and a specially adapted garden area. Medical treatment and a focus on learning and coping will be central.

Building work starts in February 2012 and is scheduled for completion in August 2013.
