Horizon Wind Energy places order with Vestas for V90-3.0 MW wind turbines
Vestas has received a 201 MW order for 67 units of the V90-3.0 MW wind turbine
in the USA. The turbines will be installed at Horizon Wind Energy's Meridian Way
Wind Farm located in north-central Kansas near Concordia in Cloud County.
Meridian Way is being developed and will be constructed, owned and operated by
Horizon Wind Energy, a wind project developer based in Houston, Texas. Horizon
is a fully owned subsidiary of Energias de Portugal, S.A., a major Portuguese
utility and one of the world's largest generators of electricity from renewable
energy sources. By the end of 2007, Horizon will have developed more than 2,000
MW and will be operating wind power plants with a total installed capacity of
over 1,300 MW. Horizon is currently developing a portfolio of more than 9,000 MW
in over a dozen states.
“We are excited about the purchase of the V90-3.0 MW turbines for the Meridian
Way Wind Farm and look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Vestas
for future wind farm development,” says Antonio Martins da Costa, CEO of Horizon
Wind Energy.
The Meridian Way Wind Farm is Vestas' largest order for the V90-3.0 MW wind
turbine in North America to date.
“At both state and federal levels, we are witnessing growing concerns over
energy security and climate change, which, in turn, translate into increasing
interest in wind power as a clean, reliable and competitive way of generating
electricity. Vestas and Horizon are both leaders in their fields, working
towards expanding the use of wind power in the USA. With this V90-3.0 MW order,
we are taking another important step towards achieving this goal,” says Jens
Søby, President of Vestas Americas A/S and continues: “Over the years, Vestas
and Horizon have built strong and long-term working relations, and it is a great
pleasure for Vestas to see this further develop with the Meridian Way Wind
Farm.”
The order comprises of the supply and commissioning of the turbines, and a
five-year service and maintenance agreement. Delivery of the 67 wind turbines
will begin in mid-year 2008, and commissioning is expected to be completed in
2008.
The above order does not affect Vestas' expectations for 2007 cf. Company
announcement No. 32/2007 of 21 August 2007.
