In 2023 the region of Dalarna, where the Scandinavian Mountains Airport, Sälen/Trysil sits, rose to 5th place as the most visited region by British visitors to Sweden, with over 26,000 bed nights. There has been increasing interest over recent years from British travellers in this stunningly beautiful, central Swedish region. This is welcome and timely news.

Hundfjället/Tandådalen ski resorts are just a 10-minute transfer away, something even the most excited families can cope with. Sälen is just 25 minutes from Scandinavian Mountains Airport and is the largest skiing area in Sweden suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers. The area is made up of four areas, Lindvallen, Högfjället, and Tandådalen/ Hundfjället, with over 100 slopes between them. Ideal for families, alongside skiing, there’s entertainment on tap including a wide range of magical winter activities, a waterpark, and shopping facilities.  There are a range of hotels to choose from, as well as over 50 restaurants.

You don´t need to be a skier to enjoy Dalarna´s winter wonderland. Other wonderful, memory-making winter holiday experiences for the family available locally include:

  • A guided snowshoe walk at Renbiten, with reindeer kept and herded by local Sami people including enjoying Swedish fika by the campfire.
  • Ice fishing. Sweden and the Dalarna region is a paradise for fishing enthusiasts with 100 000 lakes and majestic rivers. In winter, you can ice fish by drilling a hole in the ice. If you are a beginner, book and go with an experienced guide who has all the safety equipment and knowledge.
  • Dogsledding is one of the most popular ecotourism activities in Sweden. With guests coming from far and near to experience the thrill of riding or driving a dogsled.
  • Take a traditional kicksled for spin. This old-fashioned mode of winter transportation is still a common sight in large parts of Sweden. You stand on one of the metal runners and use your other foot to kick backwards, to move the sled forward. It's fun, environmentally friendly, and a good form of exercise. It even has a seat on the front for a friend.

Flights are on Sundays between 2nd February and 30th March 2025 with prices from GBP 258.09 per person return.
