Experience Nature and Community at Swedish Sporting Events

Report this content

(March 2022)

Swedes are famously fond of the outdoors to an almost religious degree, and have a long history of arranging athletic events, from the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm to the annual Vasaloppet, a 90-km cross-country skiing event that celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and the Swedish classic Vansbrosimmet, Sweden´s largest open water event now celebrating 70 years!

Outdoor education for children such as "Mulle," an imaginary forest creature who teaches preschoolers about nature, along with scouting, "sports holidays" and companies offering their workers "wellness subsidies," run with this informal love and make it institutional. Paired with the Swedish right to roam and a democratic attitude to sports, sporting events in Sweden are not just for the elite athletes who end up on the podium.

It is not surprising then that Sweden offers an enormous amount of variety when it comes to year-round sporting events the length and breadth of the country.

Anyone who wants to experience nature, community and achieve goals at any level is welcome. Read on for endurance events of nearly every kind, from north to south, in every season.

Ice Ultra Marathon

For those who love the extreme, this competition offers just that. If traversing 230km in unforgiving winter weather, through the snow-covered feeding grounds of the reindeer kept by the Sami sounds like your kind of adventure, look no further. This race is small and self-supported. Just be sure not to litter, or you will be disqualified.

The next Ice Ultra will be held on February 21, 2023.

Kullamannen

This February´s Kullamannen ultra-marathon bills itself as "the slayer of strong men and women." Kullamannen, the shadowy figure for which the race is named may have been a knight with a broken heart, or perhaps King Olav, the last survivor of the battle of Öresund in 999, who threw himself in the water rather than fall at the hands of his enemies. The race is set at Kullaberg, where Skagerrak and Kattegat meet November 4-6, 2022.

CLASSIC SWEDISH SPORTING EVENTS

En Svensk Klassiker (A Swedish Classic)

This suite of free-standing heritage races are not related but taken together they are considered a quartet to complete for the truly well-rounded Swedish endurance athlete. This includes skiing 90 km, biking 315 km, swimming 3 km and running 30 km in one year. Muscle pain, shin splints and blisters are to be expected, as are a festive atmosphere, camaraderie, and immersive natural experiences.

The four races are the below: Vasaloppet, Vansbrosimmet, Vätternrundan and Lidingöloppet.

Vasaloppet

A cross-country ski event that draws elite participants and amateur athletes alike, all eager to prove themselves along the tracks that soon-to-be Swedish king Gustav Ericsson Vasa skied as he fled the troops of Danish king Christian II in the winter of 1521. The course runs through the province of Dalarna, from Sälen to Mora. The events take place from February 24 through March 5, 2023.

Vansbrosimningen (The Vansbro Swim)

Image
Sweden's largest open water event would have celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Now this venerable race in the heart of Dalarna is back. The first swim in 1950 under the six bridges of the Vanå and the Västerdal river was ten people strong, today more than 15 000 participants line up to start surrounded by birches and greenery. There is also a winter version, but the classic 3 km version takes place on July 9, 2022.

There is also a mountain bike version for off-road enthusiasts.
