Cambridge, 30 November 2023: A project to help Cambridge University staff travel sustainability has won a national award.

The pilot study by University’s Environmental Sustainability Team and micromobility company, Voi, won the E-Mobility Project of the Year at the national Sustainable Travel Awards 2023, organised by Team Modeshift.

The Travel at Work pilot has seen 16 university departments taking part in the first six months, with over 500 e-scooter and e-bike trips taken for travel at work journeys.

University staff receive free credits to use on either an e-bike or e-scooter to take journeys between sites for meetings and site visits to help reduce the university’s carbon footprint.

With no emissions ‘at tailpipe’, e-scooters and e-bikes can help to reduce emissions and air pollution in cities, and have been shown to cut commuting time by 47%, helping to reduce congestion as well.

Since the e-scooter trial was launched in Cambridge in October 2020, public hire e-scooters have become an important addition to transport in the city, with just over 162,000 people in the city now signed up to Voi.

They are a much greener way to travel and since their introduction in Cambridge have replaced over 900,000 car journeys, clocking up nearly 4 million miles and reducing CO2 emissions in the city by an estimated 390 tonnes.

Emma Hughes, Voi’s Senior Manager Global Partnerships, said: “We’re thrilled to receive this award with Cambridge University and proud to be part of this innovative pilot programme to help reduce the university’s carbon footprint.

“With no emissions, every single e-scooter and e-bike trip that replaces a car journey is helping to transform UK towns and cities into cleaner and healthier places to live, work and visit.”

Mike Davies, Transport Team Manager for the University of Cambridge said “Growing numbers of staff have found the e-scooters and e-bikes to be a convenient, safe, and enjoyable means of moving around between sites during the working day. It’s great that the scheme has been recognised nationally.”

As part of Voi’s mission to provide safe, sustainable and reliable micromobility for all, Voi riders can take advantage of Voi for All discounts which provide discounted travel to students, people on low incomes, including refugees and asylum seekers, disabled people and people over 65, to help with the cost of living.
