Young people aged between 16 and 18 will now be able to take advantage of a safe, affordable and sustainable form of transport as the age limit for riding Voi rental e-scooters in Cheltenham and Gloucester has been lowered.

The minimum age for riding a Voi e-scooter has been reduced from 18 to 16 years of age in Cheltenham and Gloucester.

The reduction will open up new opportunities for young people such as those in sixth form or further education to move around the city for education, work and leisure.

The move follows a joint effort between the council and Voi to make the age limit the same as it was for the previous operator of the Cheltenham and Gloucester e-scooter trial.

By lowering the age limit for e-scooter riders, the Council and Voi aims to encourage more active lifestyles, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute to a cleaner, greener environment.

All riders must hold a provisional or full driving licence. When they sign up to the Voi app, they undertake safety training before they can take their first ride.

New riders are encouraged to complete safe scooter skills training, such as Voi’s online Ride Safe Academy or monthly webinars.

They are also given regular safety advice through the app, emails and in PR campaigns.

Jack Samler, Voi General Manager UK, Ireland and France, said, “I’m pleased to have worked in partnership with Gloucestershire County Council to expand access to e-scooters for younger riders in response to rider feedback.

“We recognise the importance of prioritising safety and have a range of measures in place to ensure the safe and responsible use of e-scooters, including online and in person safety training, educational campaigns, enforcement measures, and ongoing campaigns to promote responsible riding behaviors."

As part of Voi’s mission to provide safe, sustainable and reliable micromobility for all, Voi riders can take advantage of Voi for All discounts which provide discounted travel to people on low incomes, disabled people and people over 65, Voi 4 Heroes which supports NHS, emergency service workers, military personnel and veterans, and Voi for Students which offers a discount for students and staff at higher education institutions.
